Learn to choose a fantasy football draft order that will produce a balanced team that can destroy the competition week in and week out.

Choosing the proper fantasy football draft picks is perhaps the most important part of the year when it comes to playing real-time fantasy football. Individuals who spend extra time researching trends and planning out a fantasy football draft order ahead of time, will most likely be much more successful. While less serious players will spend more time looking at fantasy football team names, those who wish to win the league should focus on the basics. Here are a few things to consider about choosing the proper fantasy football draft order.

Scoring System

Before choosing a specific draft order, an individual should look at the scoring system that is being used for the fantasy football league. Depending on whether the game is being played on Fox fantasy football, CBS fantasy football, or on ESPN, there are subtle differences that a player should be aware of. In some leagues, certain positions are more valuable than others because of differences in scoring. For example, in some leagues, more points are awarded for passing yardage which means that a quarterback would potentially be more valuable.

Running Back First

Even though it may seem like a cliché, most of the time an individual should draft an elite running back with their first pick. In the NFL today, there simply are not as many elite running backs as there once was. More teams are going to a two-back system which limits the possibilities for running backs to accumulate great numbers like they once did. This means that everyone should try to at least get one running back that is the feature back for their respective team with the first pick.

Second Pick

After the initial pick of an elite running back, the conventional wisdom says to get another running back. However, this may not necessarily be the case with the evolution of the NFL game. At this point, an individual should most likely try to draft the best player available regardless of whether it is another running back, a quarterback, or a wide receiver. If there are not any more elite running backs left and there is the top wide receiver available, it makes perfect sense to go ahead and draft the receiver.

One Quarterback Only

In most cases, an individual should only draft one quarterback. Many people get caught up in the idea of taking two or three quarterbacks for their team. When only one quarterback can play, it does not make sense to take up roster spots with reserves. If a quarterback goes down with injury or has a bye week, an individual can pick up a decent quarterback on the waiver wire and drop their lowest rated running back or wide receiver.

Choosing the Proper Fantasy Football Draft Order

Before the draft takes place, one should spend some time ranking players in the order in which they would draft them. When doing these rankings, an individual should simply list them in order of the best players. Then as the draft unfolds, they can adapt on the fly and take the best player that is left at the time.
